City rolls out business empowerment workshops
To empower small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) with business development information, the City is rolling out a series of Business Empowerment and Information Dissemination Workshops during October.

These workshops will also inform SMME owners about compliance and outline opportunities available.

Planned workshops for October include:
  • Agri-Business and Retail on 6 October at Myeka Sports Ground.
  • Business Information Sharing on 8 October at Mdumezulu Skills Centre.
  • Agri-business and Retail on 14 October at Ogagwini.
  • Retail and access to finance on 20 October at Magabheni Community Hall.
  • Retail Workshop on 22 October at Qadi Sports Ground.
  • Business information sharing on 28 October at Burlington Sports Ground.

A cooperative and construction development themed workshop will be held in November. Details will be communicated closer to the date.

Deputy Head of SMME Development under the Business Support, Tourism, Markets, and Agri-Business Unit, Nonku Mthembu said they have partnered with relevant departments in eThekwini, government entities and stakeholders to ensure these workshops are a success.

Mthembu said the workshops will focus on key elements namely cooperative development, access to finance and market, Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act, compliance to supply chain management processes, agribusiness, and radical economic transformation. They will also cover informal trade procedures, how to start a business, business licensing and liquor licensing processes, contractor compliance and outline other business support programmes available.

“This is one of our efforts to empower businesses to disseminate information and growth strategies in order for them to be sustainable during these tough economic times,” she said.

Mthembu said an impact assessment study in the wards where the programmes will be facilitated is planned. This will evaluate the impact of the programme by reviewing the status of the businesses post-workshop.

“This will assist in identifying areas of intervention and getting SMME feedback.”

The business empowerment workshops will be held under strict Covid-19 regulations. It is important to RSVP by emailing nosizwe.mbunquka@durban.gov.za or calling 031 311 4500.
