Call to enter World Town Planning Day competition

Built environment professionals are being given an opportunity to apply their skills and give their best shot at reinventing people spaces, with a focus on the ‘new normal’ that has been imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic on society.

The competition is part of the World Town Planning Day which the City and its partners ISOCARP, the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the South African Council for Planners, SA Cities Network, the Municipal Institute of Learning and the South African Local Government Association will celebrate through an international webinar from 4 to 6 November under the topic “The Paradox of Planning Implementation Across the Globe”.

Young professionals and students from diverse backgrounds including technical, art and design or social science disciplines are being invited to design, build, document and submit their projects by 16 October.
Entrants can either work individually or in teams and are encouraged to photograph and video record their design and development process which they will include as learnings during their final presentations. The number of entries is limited to one person or team per organisation.

No sponsorship or reimbursement will be made available for competition costs such as developing prototypes. Experts in urban design, smart cities, spatial planning, strategic planning and architecture will form part of the jury whose evaluations will determine the winners. Winners will be announced on 5 November.

Each team or individual submission should be a one to two page abstract, with open format, that includes:

  • Project title and authors (names, affiliations, and email addresses)
  • An abstract of 100 words or fewer
  • A brief description of the design context, the people involved, and brief methodology
  • One or more refined ideas or design which can include hand-drawn sketches or digital
  • Renderings, CAD models, and/or photographs
  • Email your submission to ECOD@durban.gov.za

For more information or enquiries on the competition, email: Anele.Nkomonde@durban.gov.za or Velile.Ndaba@durban.gov.za
