City forges ahead with buy local campaign
Buy local campaign 
The Buy Local, Invest Local Campaign spearheaded by the City’s Economic Development Unit as part of the Economic Recovery Plan, seeks to assist rebuild and revitalise economic activity among local businesses. The intent is to keep business revenue circulating within the City’s communities and ensure local businesses are placed at the forefront of economic development, growth and investment.

The first phase of the campaign in November 2020 was a call for uniquely Durban businesses to register on the Municipality’s website, which garnered a total of 268 local businesses responding to the call.
 
Verification Team
The entrants have been assessed by an inter-departmental verification team comprised of representatives from the Economic Development Cluster and 107 qualifying entrants who met the criteria were shortlisted. Of these, 19 local businesses were recommended by the verification team to be subjected to further investigation and screening.

Verification Criteria
The Buy Local verification team assessed each of the 19 applicants using the qualification criteria below:
  • The product/service/event/experience offered in terms of the campaign is a demonstrably or proven unique innovative concept;
  • The product/service/event/experience will be exceptionally beneficial to, or demonstrates exceptional creativity within the City;
  • The person/business who submits the application is the sole provider / exclusively Durban business of the product/service/event/experience offered within eThekwini; and
  • The reasons/motivation for qualification by the applicant for entry into this campaign are found to be sound by the Final Arbiters (Head of the Economic Development Unit EDU and the Head: Business Support, Markets and Tourism Unit).
Championing the campaign on behalf of the Economic Development Unit, Senior Manager Dr Mimi Ndokweni said: “The City’s Economic Recovery Plan advocates for building social coalitions and a Buy Local, Invest Local campaign initiative as one of the ways to deal with the effects brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has had a devastating impact on businesses.”

The next phase of the Buy Local campaign will afford the selected 19 businesses sector information support and marketing and profiling that will assist to elevate their businesses through media exposure.
