Business inspection blitz to protect consumer rights
SAPS, Metro Police and City officials confiscated illegal goods
at a shop in the inner City.

FINES worth about R76 000 were issued to businesses during a blitz recently. Expired and counterfeit goods were also confiscated during the operation, which was a lead up to World Consumer Rights Day that was held on 15 March.

EThekwini Municipality partnered with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, the National Consumer Commission and other key consumer protection agencies in a multi-disciplinary operation to inspect business compliance. The programme focused on the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods, liquor outlets, motor, cellphone and financial sectors.

The joint business inspections in the inner city and Isiphingo Central Business District areas proved to be an effective way of clamping down on non-compliance to various regulations and bylaws to ensure consumer safety. The Isiphingo operation resulted in fines worth R32 000 being issued for various bylaw contraventions.

Thirteen undocumented people were arrested. Consumable goods worth thousands was confiscated as officials discovered food that was past its expiry date being sold to the public. Fines to the value of
R43 900 were issued for noncompliance during the inner city blitz. Several businesses were fined for trading without licences and business records.
