Launch of Roosfontein Nature Reserve

Members of the media are invited to the launch of the Roosfontein Nature Reserve to be held on Tuesday, 05 April 2016, at Mkhumbane Hall, Chesterville.

The Reserve received the legal status in October 2015, in terms of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act of 2003
The Roosfontein Nature Reserve, located between Chesterville, Westville and Queensburgh was one of many Municipal Nature Reserves that was lacking adequate legal protection and could not be considered as a national protected area because the future conservation land-use was not guaranteed.

Mayor James Nxumalo is convinced that the development is one of the significant moments for the Municipality as it contributes to halting the loss of ecosystem services and promotes biodiversity conservation.

“Conservation of natural areas is important for the City as it provides free ecosystem services such as clean and adequate water to the people of eThekwini. Globally there is a growing awareness of the importance of the natural environment in reducing risk, enhancing resilience and ensuring sustainable communities,” said Nxumalo.

Nxumalo added that environmental protection plays an important role in growing the City’s economy as its contribute to the ecotourism industry and provides a significant contribution to our ability to adapt to climate change impacts.

This launch will be attended by key dignitaries from the environmental sector and institutions, who will be accompanying the Mayor to the launch. This function will start with a tour to the Roosfontein Nature Reserve and end with formal function at Umkhumbane Hall.
