In 2006, the Environmental Planning and Climate Protection Department initiated the eThekwini Environmental Enforcement Forum. The purpose was to create a communicative platform between all agencies, operational within the municipality, whose mandates are to regulate environmental legislation.

Purpose:  To create an intergovernmental communications platform allowing for ease of cooperation when dealing with environmental transgressions that may require the effort of a number of agencies/departments to address.

Who: EPCPD, National Department of Agriculture; KZN Department of Environmental Affairs and Rural Development; National Department of Water Affairs; National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries: Forestry Section; Ezemvelo KZN Wild Life; and various departments from eThekwini Municipality such as the  Health Department, Coastal Stormwater and Catchment Management, Natural Resources Management Division of the Parks Department as well as the eThekwini Metro Water Services: Environmental Branch and Fire Safety. Representatives of the National Prosecuting Services also attend the forum.

When: The forum meets every two months to discuss the following issues:

  • Existing criminal/ civil and administrative law cases and their progress;

  • Specific environmental crimes and who/what would be the best manner in which to tackle them;

  • The formation of incident specific multi-agency task teams (MATS) and

  • Ways in which agencies can aid and assist one another in enforcing environmental legislation

Where: Meetings take place either at Paradise Valley Nature Reserve or at the City Engineers Building in Durban

How to get involved: As this forum deals with matters of a legal nature the forum is restricted to specific members of government agencies/departments.
