Why is it important to have a business license?
The Business Act, 1991 (Act No. 71 of 1991) states that no person/business may conduct a business without a business license. It is important for the public to comply with this legislation so that measures are in place to protect both the business owner and the public. Anyone wishing to open an accommodation or entertainment establishment, or food outlet business in eThekwini has to register with eThekwini Municipality Business Licensing Department.

How long is a business license valid for?
Licenses are valid for as long as the business is in operation and it is still compliant with relevant legislations and By-Laws. It is renewable once a year by the last working day of January. The annual notifications for renewals are sent to all license holders.

How long does it take for the business licenses to be issued?
21 days if compliant with all relevant Departmental requirements. License applications are considered for recommendations subject to departmental requirements being complied with. The Business Licensing Department also makes provision for the following:

  • Amendment of a license issued.
  • Amendment of a condition on the endorsements to an issued license.
  • Re-inspection of a food premises for the removal of a prohibition.
  • Fingerprint clearance.
  • License hearing.
