Housebound Service is offered by the eThekwini Municipal Libraries and Heritage Department to members of the eThekwini community who are unable to visit the library due to disability or frailty and have no one to collect books for them from the library.

This worthwhile service started in 1973 and has now been extended to residents of retirement homes who are not ill, but are unable to reach a library due to, for example, transport difficulties. It has also been extended to physically challenged individuals living in their private homes or in institutions.

The Housebound staff do home visits, and visits to the retirement institutions and deliver books monthly. Crates of books (fiction and non-fiction in large print and normal print), audiovisual material, magazines and talking books, are distributed to the homes where residents can select their reading materials.

For further enquiries, and, for those who want to join, check the housebound details in branch libraries.
