Durban Fresh Produce Market functions as a commission market and welcomes all fresh produce farmers/suppliers to market their produce through one or more of our five market agents. Market agents sell produce on behalf of farmers and suppliers and receive a mutually negotiated commission.
Commission Market System
  • As with all national bulk fresh produce markets, Durban Market operate essentially on a commission-based system where the market’s agents and the market (eThekwini Municipality) receive a commission from producers for their services offered.
  • Market Agents who are appointed by the Head of Markets, are allocated floor space on the market to sell produce on behalf of the producers/suppliers.
  • Produce consigned to a market agent remains the property of the producer/supplier until it is sold. Once sold, ownership is transferred from producer to buyer.
  • Market Agents receive a pre-determined commission which is negotiated between the market agent and producer/supplier, for services rendered.
  • Durban Fresh Produce Market receives a fixed commission of 5% on sales.
