The primary objective of the Access to Finance Programme is to develop and empower SMMEs
financially in order to avoid such failure, and thereafter enable them to access finance from financial
institutions. The programme’s secondary objective is to act as a conduit for banking institutions in South Africa to engage with the Unit in order to provide innovative financial and non-financial assistance to SMMEs.

This is in line with the Financial Sectors Charter introduced in 2002, which encourages financial
institutions to contribute to enterprise development as well as facilitate access to financial services for
SMMEs. Relationships have been formed with all major financial institutions, namely, ABSA, FNB,
Standard Bank, Nedbank, Regent Factors, GroFin and Old Mutual.
